Half Marathon Training Run

Ten Miles today. 10. On the treadmill.  Brought to you by Fons and Porter and Quilt in a Day Youtube videos.

I am back to the 90/30 ratio of seconds running to seconds walking.  I am so sore tonight.  It is hard on this old woman.

I ended up speeding up on the last mile because my son called and wanted to FaceTime.  I had to finish up so I could see my granddaughter.

  1. I have started following your blog, and I really enjoy it! I, too, am a "late life runner." I started running two years ago at age 53. I'm slow, and I really don't care (although it's nice to see some improvement). Last fall I did my first half, and ran another one last weekend. I actually came in seven minutes faster. I figure at this rate, maybe by the time I'm 60 I'll be close to a two-four half? Or not! But I'll definitely have fun working on it.

  2. So glad you found my blog. I started it because I couldn't find hardly any "late life runners" like us! I don't post a lot, but maybe I will now, since I know I have at least one follower!! Yay! I don't really care either that I'm slow. At least we are out there. And....at our age the competition is so slim, often if we just enter a race we get a medal!!

  3. So true! My first half I finished in 2:39 and placed 86 out of 158 in my age group. My half last week I came in at 2:32 and came in third....out of seven. I kind of liked that! I actually thought the small race was so much nicer. Only about 120 did the half and maybe 20 did the full. I might do it again next year.

  5. Mary, you still beat my HM times! My first I did 4/1 ratio of run/walk (minutes) and finished in 2:43. I felt so good afterwards I signed up for another three weeks later and increased my ratio to 5/1. At it my knee blew out at about mile 7, but i still finished in 2:45. Any advice on how I need to approach this two? One is november 1st, the second November 21st. Should i try to beat my time on the first, or just try to finish injury free so I can try to beat my time on the second? What should I do in between, get in one more long run or just take it easy. I'm only up to ten miles now.

  6. Those are really close together. After I do a half, I tend not to want to run long for a while. I also like to do my last long run two weeks before the half, and then start the taper week with a medium run. What was your original plan? Did I read you signed up for the second one first? If you signed up for the second one first, I would use the first one as a long run, but put in a lot of extra walking. Hopefully you can avoid injuries that way. If you're totally ready now, you could try hard at the first one. When the second one rolls around, you could just do it for fun or, if you don't feel like it, just skip it. I personally would probably go for option one. For me, two in three weeks would be a lot at this point. And I was absolutely no help!!

  7. No, you were some help! I think I'll take your advice and use the first half marathon as a long training run. Just cover the miles even if I have to walk the last 2-3. i am going to try to do 11 this week, but I may walk the last couple, and I plan to take the first 9-10 really, really slow....14-15 minute mile pace. Then after the first one, if I have no injuries try to beat my time on the second one. If I have an injuries, then I will not schedule two so close together again!...its just that you spend so much time training for one, and there are usually several close together in the spring and fall....I hate to waste all that training.
