2013 year in review

It has certainly been a good year.....I am very thankful for my new running hobby. I started the C25K program in February. I ran in four 5k races, one 10k, and am up to seven miles in my training for a half marathon in 2014.

If you are interested in my other hobby, go to my other blog and see what all went on in 2013.

Friday Long Run

Today's long run wasn't that long, only 5.17 miles.  I am following a slightly modified version of Hal Higdon's novice half-marathon plan.  Every few weeks, he has you scale back a bit on your long run.  Hopefully next friday, I'll be back to 7 miles.  I ran along our lakeside trail that included the hills in the first mile.  Wasn't too bad.  I seem to be compelled to try to improve, even on what is supposed to be an easy, long, relatively slow, run.  Each mile, I improved my pace.  :)  I like that.

Best run ever!

YEE-HAW! I just came back from my best run ever. On the track. Level. Fastest time for three miles.  All of you veteran runners out there, remember I am an old (54) beginner....so bear with me.  I am an analyst at heart and love to analyze the hows and whys. After my difficult run on Monday, I decided to take a new approach today. Mind over body. As long as my heart rate didn't get over 170 I was going to keep pushing it and not slow down no matter how I felt. I did just that and check out those splits, baby!  One of my goals for 2014 was to be able to run a ten minute mile for three miles. I am almost there! Now if I can do that on the New Year's Day 5k race…

I read an article a while back about how people will quote the scripture "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" in reference to not exercising, and how that is really backwards.  The flesh (body) is willing, but the spirit (mind) is weak.  If our mind tells our body to do it, it will.  In my mind today, I kept thinking of my 62 year old friend running a 9:25 min/mi pace, and she is a beginning runner.  Yeah, she is probably in a bit better shape than me, but I'm not in bad shape.  I told myself "just watch your heart rate…you know it often goes over 170 and you are still ok……just push it a bit….only 3 miles…you can keep it up"  Isn't it amazing what our self-talk can do? for good and for bad.

Thank you Lord for a good run on your birthday!

Why are some days hard?

Three miles today.  Really, really difficult.  It was cold and windy.  34 with a feels like of 28. My body just didn't want to run.  My overall time was ok, but I did a lot of walking breaks. I never got into my groove.

Recap of today's long run

7 miles! I had some stomach issues after last weeks run, on the way home, cramping. I was worried about that today but I took extra care to hydrate well yesterday and this morning. I used my new hand held water bottle filled with Nunn sports water, and since it had been 4 hours since breakfast I ate five of these yummy Honey Stinger energy chews. I sipped the water all during the run.

Man, do I sweat! Look at that hat!

My stomach started cramping around mile five. I was so disappointed, I almost turned around to go back to the car, but I didn't. It got better. I was able to finish. I did a couple of short walk breaks when the stomach thing started, but over all I am thrilled with #1, actually doing 7 miles, and #2, doing my long run at an improved pace for me.

Faster

I have a buddy at work who I encouraged to do the C25K program. She was pretty fit to start with because she did a lot of bicycling with her husband. She just finished her first 5k...and WON her age group (she is age 62) with a time of 29:xx. Her pace was an average of 9:25 min/mi!! All this time I've been giving her advice..ha! She needs to give me advice. Honestly, I am not competitive but when I see someone accomplish something it gives me hope that maybe I can too. One of my goals for 2014 was to be able to run a 10 minute mile pace. I just seem so slow now.

And I guess, I've been paying too much attention to my heart rate and not enough on how I feel, and have kept my pace slow. Tonight, I only had two miles on my schedule so I decided to just see how long I could hold a ten minute mile pace. No, I didn't hold it for both miles but I did well enough to get an average pace of 10:12 min/mi. I was thrilled! Yes, it was only two miles but still, probably the fastest I've run two was around 11:00.

I can get faster......

Running in Louisville

I got to travel to Louisville to attend a baby shower for my daughter in law and baby Emma this weekend. While I was there I was able to get in a three mile run. It was exciting and a little scary to run someplace new by myself.

Ready to run!

Started and ended at the campus. I was pretty slow, but I had to make some pictures! I really loved running a new route.

Friday long run

Today was a bit frustrating. Wanted to run at my favorite place but didn't get there until the rain had started coming down pretty hard....and my garmin wouldn't find the satellite. I ended up using the treadmill. 6.5 miles is a long time on a treadmill.

I used the garmin for my heart rate but I've not been able to upload it tonight. I don't know what is going on with it. I think the rate stayed in the 140s most of the time, when I was doing a 12 min/mi pace. I kicked it up a bit to 11 min/mi pace for mile six and then a 10 minute pace for the last half mile. Thought I'd burned a ton of calories so I decided to get an Arby's roast beef and Swiss on the way home. I was hungry!!

Can you believe the calories and fat?? I don't think I'll ever eat one of those again.

Am I nuts?

I did it. Yep, signed up for a half marathon. I am going to run the Knoxville Covenant Half Marathon on March 30, 2014....and honestly, I am very excited, and a bit scared, about it. My friend from work signed up too. We are going to use the Hal Higdon half marathon novice 1 training plan. You can find it here.

If you don't have goals to reach for, you won't do great things!
